Campground Review of Mt Desert Narrows Campground in Maine

Although it has been over a month since we visited Acadia National Park, I thought it was only fair to create a blog post of the awesome Mt Desert Narrows Campground we stayed at while adventuring around the island so you could enjoy it too. 🙂

HOORAY SUNSET PICTURES!

Deanna got some awesome photos of the sunset on our first evening at the campground (above). We have been on the road for a little over a month thus far and this has definitely been the most scenic campground we’ve stayed at thus far.

AMENITIES

We ended up staying at a partial hook-up site (30 amp and water) and really enjoyed our stay. As I stated in the video, we didn’t feel the need to get full-hookups at this campground as they had very clean and individual showers which made for a great comfortable stay. Taking showers out the equation our rig can last about a week on both black and grey tanks, so we were good to go.

One cool aspect about Mt Desert Narrows Campground is the huge difference between low tides and high tides just within view of most campsites (the park is kind of on a slowly declined hill). There is literally little to no water at low tide and high tide the entire bay area fills up.

While staying here we saw some folks walking out onto the semi-dry water bed looking for clams. Looked like they were actually fairly successful in their findings too! 🙂

CAMPGROUND LAYOUT

As you can see (above) we stayed at site 341 which was horizontal compared to most of the campground and it worked out great.  We have a 21ft trailer (that I round up to 25ft whenever someone asks) and we had no issues fitting in this spot.

Most of the ocean front campsites are actually tent sites located in the upper left side of the map shown above. There were some openings for ocean front RV sites, but we decided it wasn’t worth the cost as we just went for a walk whenever we wanted to go check out the ocean.

We did only have one day where the wind died down enough to have a campfire. Most days while we were visiting (end of May/early June) the wind off the ocean was a wee bit too strong to keep a fire going…safely. We did get to enjoy it one night, so that made us happy enough.

THINGS TO DO IN THE SURROUNDING AREA:

We ventured off quite a bit from our campsite (as many folks do) to explore the surrounding area. A few shops we stopped by were actually sister stores (Bar Harbor Cellars – Wine, and Atlantic Brewing Co. – Beer). We ended up getting some wine for family while I also enjoyed a couple beers from the Atlantic Brewing Co.

We also just happened to bump into some fellow like minded full-time RVers while visiting the brewery. Joe and Kait from WereTheRussos are an awesome friendly couple and definitely recommend checking out their website and YouTube channel as well!

The obvious must see in this area is Acadia National Park. Here are a few of the places we went to visit along with our YouTube playlist showcasing each area:

Gorham Mountain Trail
Jordan Pond Path
Cadillac Mountain
Bass Harbor Lighthouse
Witch Hole Pond
Great Head Trail, Sand Beach, Bar Island

CELL SIGNAL

If you are like us and full-time RV or need to have yourself some communication. AT&T is the real winner at this campground. We did end up using our nighthawk hotspot and an external antenna in order to get good enough signal to work for a week while visiting the National Park.

Verizon works for calls, but we couldn’t get a reliable enough signal from our phones in order to use it as a hot spot. Granted, we didn’t get our weBoost installed until AFTER Acadia, so maybe you would have better luck using a cell booster of some sort.

OVERALL IMPRESSION AND WOULD WE STAY AGAIN?

Quite honestly folks, this campground set the bar fairly high for future campgrounds. We have stayed at some fairly nice campgrounds since, but this is still on the top of our favorites list. So would we stay here again? Most definitely. The only downside of our stay was the fact we visited during the holidays so our passport america discount didn’t help out much. The stay was a bit more expensive than a normal week. With that aside, we totally recommend this campground and hope you all get a chance to stay here at some point.
