If you haven’t had a chance yet, take a look at our 2019 Jayco Eagle HTX 27SGX Fifth Wheel video located at the top of this post. I’m mainly creating this blog post to give you a bit more details what I (Shane) liked and disliked about this 5th wheel to hopefully help you in your search.

THE GOOD

For a lighter weight 5th wheel, they really do pack quite a bit of usable space into a smaller area. At only 31ft long, this trailer has a sizable living area with a stylish corner kitchen to add to the nice general flow.

The bathroom and bedrooms are also very spacious for a smaller 5th wheel with storage located throughout.

I especially like the fact that even though these are opposing slides, you should still be able to access the refrigerator with the slides in due to the lack of an island.

THE BAD

I am truly a fan of RVs that can be mostly completely usable with all the slides in. Technically you can get to the fridge, but the rest of the unit may be a bit harder to navigate.

Say you want to boondock in a Walmart parking lot on a longer trip towards your destination. Rigs like this make it much harder to maneuver and make the place feel less like home. However, I do understand that most folks just take their RV out for weekend trips and this might not be a huge issue.

APPLIANCES

Although the MSRP for the 2019 Jayco Eagle HTX 27SGX Fifth Wheel is a bit higher for my comfort level, they really do pack in a lot of higher end appliances throughout the unit.

Having an 8 cubic foot fridge and a furrion oven/stove combo really does help keep things feeling more like home. Not to mention the newer digital controls for your ACs and slides, make this RV more contemporary and up to date in this day and age.

COMFORT

Although people’s comfort expectations in a RV may vary, this wasn’t the most comfortable RV I have been in. I think our Grand Design 5th wheel has much more comfortable furniture and it was well under this particular MSRP. The odd thing is that our furniture is also Thomas Payne, so must just be a different set that I didn’t really enjoy.

The dining chairs were about as rock solid as many dining chairs are. If I were going to be living in this rig full-time, I would definitely consider swapping out some of the furniture for something a bit more comfortable. Especially the queen sized bed that seemingly are never comfortable in any stock RV.

BUILD QUALITY

The build quality in the 2019 Jayco Eagle HTX 27SGX Fifth Wheel is near or just above the mediocre range for this price point. Everything seemed to be pretty solid and comparable to the Grand Design that we currently live in. Nothing in this RV looked like it would fall apart quickly compared to similar rigs we have been in, so not horrible.

However, just like many other 5th wheels in this price range, you are paying for cheaper wood and cheaper plastics to keep the RV lightweight and within the price range mentioned.

STORAGE

Although this doesn’t have nearly as much storage as our Grand Design 273MK, it still has quite a bit of storage for your weekend warrior or even full-time RVing needs.

The outside passthrough and front storage bay are actually a bit larger than our Grand Design, but there really aren’t any other places to store things on the outside of the rig. With the exception of the possible 3rd propane tank storage area, all of the storage will be in the passthrough and the front storage bay.

The inside storage is very well organized and for the most part they utilize all the empty spaces to store lighter items and keep things nice and neat. I like the added storage around the entertainment center for all the extra geek-like items we may want to store as well as storage above the chairs/couch.

BANG FOR YOUR BUCK

Now all the other categories that I mentioned above were pretty opinionated, and this would probably be the most opinionated category. This will really depend what you want out of the fifth wheel you are purchasing and how much you plan on using it.

For me personally I actually live in our fifth wheel full-time, so my opinion may vary quite a bit from yours.

I rated this a 3/5 because our Grand Design was quite a bit cheaper and I feel like it packs just as many amenities (if not more) into it. This only has the one AC and at this price range they could have at least put a fantastic fan above the bathroom toilet.

It does have some extra added benefits like the ladder on the back, backup camera prepped, and a hitch to tow something extra…but doesn’t really make up for the added cost in my opinion. If you really love this layout, I would either work really hard with the dealer to get the price down, or try to find something similar used.
