Exploring Grand Bay Wildlife Area in Southern Georgia

Grand Bay Wildlife Area in Southern Georgia was really our first hike through a swamp we’ve had thus far in our travels. And we didn’t even get wet!

This was really our first hike in the fall/early winter where we were able to put short sleeves back on as we were heading down south. The road getting back down to the trail head could probably use a little work, but then again…it kind of adds a bit of adventure to the trip itself. 🙂

These cypress trees offer a very unique vegetation to the already unique swampy landscape. The spanish moss hanging from the trees give this place a beautiful yet eerie vibe as we hiked further and further into the swamp.

I believe there are actually some places to launch your boat, but unfortunately the kayaks did not come with us on our adventure around the country. So maybe someday in the future we will be back for that exploration. 🙂

EPIC TOWER

One of the main reasons we picked this area to go hiking over others was the epic tower towards the end of the boardwalk. Whoever built this tower, built this thing like a fortress and built it to last. Many fire towers etc I’ve been up before have actually swayed back and forth in the wind, but this thing does not budge (in case any of you all have a fear of heights).

The view from the top of the tower is nothing short of fantastic. At the top, a monstrous wetland surrounded us leading us to wonder what creatures lurk in this unique wilderness. Ok, well it wasn’t that scary, but just look at it…it is both beautiful and creepy.

Unfortunately NO DOGS are allowed on this trail. It is mostly boardwalk anyways so I don’t think Blaze (our greyhound) would have really enjoyed it much anyways. Not as much to sniff and well, can’t really relieve himself on the boardwalk.
