Exploring Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse in Acadia National Park

Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse isn’t a huge area to explore by any means, but with the fantastic view, it doesn’t have to be.

I can tell you now, I was not expecting to get nearly as much footage at Acadia as I did, but I could just not put the camera down. There was so much beauty in this park that I wanted to capture all of it that I could. Not only was there cool places to visit within Acadia itself, but we took a little adventure to the western side of the island to see what it had to offer. (Although I think technically this is still claimed to be within Acadia National Park somehow?)

There are actually quite a few trails you can hit up on the west side, but since we were heading there a little bit later in the afternoon we decided to just hit up some neat viewpoints and relax a little.

LIGHTHOUSES OF MAINE

There are so many lighthouses in Maine (which I guess makes sense). There are 65 individual lighthouses along Maine’s coast. It would be really fun to be able to visit all of them some day, but for starters…lets show you all one. 🙂

STAIRS TO A SWEET VIEW!

Although it isn’t very long, there is a fun little path that leads you around the lighthouse on either side. One side is paved, the other side is a bit more on the rough side.

The first side we showed you (first picture in the post) has what I believe was the original bell that went along with the lighthouse. Although you aren’t supposed to ring it, I’m sure it sounds magnificent. 🙂

If you are able, I would definitely recommend hiking down the path on the “rough” side and be careful as you cross the rocks down below. The rocks were fairly sturdy when Deanna and I walked over them, but there are some large gaps depending how far down you go.

Unfortunately it was fairly overcast the day we visited so we didn’t get any epic photos of the area, but if you search online you can see how spectacular this area can get in the right conditions.

I do not believe you can go inside this particular lighthouse, but I’m sure out of the other 64 in the state, some should allow tours. There are also a few lighthouses you could visit or see from afar while visiting Acadia.

OTHER LIGHTHOUSES TO VISIT

They are Burnt Coat Harbor Lighthouse, Baker Island Lighthouse, and Egg Rock Lighthouse. If you want to get a little bit further north or south of Mt. Desert Island there will be plenty more to visit of course as well. 🙂
