5 Cool Things to See at Mackinac Island in Michigan

Howdy folks!

Before reading this post, be sure to check out our YouTube adventure video exploring Mackinac Island!

As you could see from that video, there is a ton to do and see in and around the Mackinac Island area. I’m going to narrow the sites down to the top 5 we were able to explore while visiting.

In no particular order:

1) THE FERRY RIDE ITSELF!

Maybe its just the fact that I haven’t been on very many ferry rides within my lifetime, but I had a ton of fun riding the ferry over from St. Ignace to Mackinac Island. We ended up taking Shepler’s Ferry over, but they do have a couple different options you can choose. Granted, if you have a boat, that would probably work as well. 🙂

You can also bring bikes along with you as transportation on the island itself. Just remember that there are no vehicles to take you around on the island once you arrive!

2) Mackinac Island State Park

Since we love to go hiking/walking, we decided to opt out of the biking and give the horses a break. Regardless of the transportation you choose, the views around this island are magnificent at almost every angle. Mackinac Island State Park pretty much takes over the southeastern side of the island. You can get there via all modes of transportation offered on the island. Just be careful for that horse manure!

An interesting fact about this park is that it actually used to be a National Park (the second to be established after Yellowstone National Park) before it was later changed to a State Park in 1895. Didn’t even know this until we were done visiting. The more you know…

3) Arch Rock

Although this site is technically within Mackinac Island State Park, I figured it deserved a spot of its own on this list of 5 places to see. As you can see from the gorgeous views Deanna captured on her camera, this is a very beautiful and unique spot to visit. Who would have thought that Lake Huron had such cool green hints so close to the shoreline? Not me, but this was my first time in the area to be fair. 🙂

This is a fairly busy attraction as you pretty much see it on all advertisements of Mackinac Island. However, we didn’t have any trouble getting up close for pictures/video obviously, so it is possible to check out!

4) Sugar Loaf

Ok, to be honest, I had no clue Sugar Loaf was here when headed towards the island. Let me tell ya though, it sure was sweet. Well, don’t lick the thing. We thought it was cool when we first approached it up close, but after hiking up some stairs (a TON of stairs), the perspective from above was even cooler! I’ll send you over to our good friend Wikipedia (click here for more info) if you want to learn a bit more about this 75ft tall rock. Definitely some unique natural sculptures throughout this island!

5) Fort Holmes

Why is Fort Holmes on the list rather than Fort Mackinac you may ask!? Well, I guess the first simple reason is because we are cheap and didn’t want to spend the extra money to get into Fort Mackinac….and in the same note, Fort Holmes is free! Not to mention, you are so much higher than Fort Mackinac while visiting Fort Holmes, that the view alone seemed to be worth it for me. Do note, that this is not the original Fort Holmes, but a reconstructed version. Still really cool seeing it where it once stood though!

There are also a bunch of other cool things to see at Mackinac Island (INCLUDING EATING ALL THE FUDGE). So don’t let this list hold you back if you didn’t see anything you liked! It is a very touristy area, so be prepared for a lot of other folks wanting to check out the same places you want to. We really enjoyed our adventure at Mackinac Island and hope to go back at some point to check out other portions of the island as well!
