Hiking Balance Rock State Park in Massachusetts

Balance Rock State Park was officially the first state park I had ever hiked in the state of Massachusetts! We picked quite the dreary day to explore the park so I do apologize if the footage from the video is less than spectacular.

This really was a beautiful place to go hiking at and if my body was back at 100% we would have hiked more of the park to show you all it had to offer. Hopefully within the next couple of weeks I can stop using that excuse and push forward. 🙂

Balance Rock State Park 1THE ROCK, THAT IS INDEED BALANCED.

The main attraction (or at least that I am aware of) is the very large balanced rock near the main parking lot to the state park.

Unfortunately it looks like over the years people thought it was boring and added graffiti to delicately placed rock. Whether or not this was “OKed” by locals or not, this always gets on my nerves. I’ll never understand why people do something like this. Anyways, this kind of puts our previous “rock stacking video” to shame back in Connecticut at The Rock Lot.

Unfortunately we didn’t think ahead to print one of these guys out before we took off. On the park’s website it said that it charged per car for parking…so I assumed there would  also be maps available.

Good news, parking was free when we went there in late October, but bad news there were no maps. We ended up just taking some of the wider ATV trails anyways, so we didn’t have to worry about getting lost. 🙂

Balance Rock State Park 3FALL FOLIAGE EVERYWHERE

As we noted in our video, the fall foliage was simply beautiful throughout Balance Rock State Park. It was obviously past peak but we still really enjoyed the colorful leaves scattered around the forest floor and the few remaining among the trees.

I imagine at the peak of the fall foliage this place would be amazingly beautiful. There are a vast amount of rolling hills/mountains in northwest Massachusetts with plenty of roads to view them.

Balance Rock State Park 4MMM NATURE

The trails we hiked on didn’t offer any scenic overlooks (that we are aware of) but still a great place to get out and enjoy nature.

If you are hiking around the area in late October as we were, the leaves may have fallen away enough to have a better glimpse of some of the mountains off into the distance. Even on this rainy and dreary day we thoroughly enjoyed the hike and scenery nature provided to us.

If you live in the area or know of this park, please let us know if there are some scenic overlooks that we missed in the comments below! As I stated, I wish we could have represented this park better than we did, but we could only hike so far our first day. The trails we took were fairly easy to moderate, but slippery in some spots with the loose wet rocks and plethora of leaves.
