Hiking Devil’s Lake State Park in Wisconsin

Devil’s Lake State Park was definitely the most fun we had exploring while in the state of Wisconsin! There are a ton of awesome trails to explore and if you want to just got there to chill…you can do that too!

HEADING TO THE BALANCED ROCK TRAIL

Although we have started this trail on the wrong…track…get it? (picture of train track above) Ok you got it.  We managed to find the trail we were looking for, the balanced rock trail.

You can find this trail as well as others on the state park’s website –> Click Here <–

MAYBE WE SHOULD HAVE STRETCHED

We started this trail with a fairly significant climb. Well, it was significant to us as we pretty much hiked flat land for the past month and were a wee bit out of shape. Take notice of all the beautiful purple rock that surrounds the area. I had never seen so much purple rock in my life…or really ever for that matter.

EVERYONE’S GOT A LITTLE CAPTAIN IN THEM

The vistas throughout this trail offered a great place to take a break while climbing up this steep section of the hike. It is a bit expensive getting into the park for any out of state folks, but maintaining all these trails probably utilizes those costs quickly.

TAKE THAT GRAVITY

The first landmark on this hike was balanced rock. And you know what, it was QUITE balanced. Not as balanced as the balanced rock we found in Massachusetts, but something to check out later in your spare time. 🙂

A PAVED TRAIL…UP HERE!?

The higher we got, you could imagine, the views got better and better as with most hikes up a hillside.  Much to our relief, the top of this hike was actually fairly flat once getting to the ridge line. Not only was it flat…but this trail was paved. How spoiled were we!?

DEVIL’S DOORWAY

If you bing/google/yahooify this awesome state park, you will probably see a similar image as what Deanna took above. This is Devil’s Doorway. Doesn’t look so menacing in person, but it is quite awesome. If you check out the video at the top of this post, you’ll see a pan of the surrounding area as well. Absolutely gorgeous.

LOOK AT THOSE VIEWS!

Pushing further along on the trail you will encounter, you guessed it, more amazing views. This road trip around the upper peninsula through Wisconsin really opened our eyes to how beautiful this part of the country is. Views like this is really one of our true motivation factors to get out there and explore.

PRO TIP.

In order to get down from the top of the ridge line, we kind of had to go down even STEEPER stairs/rocks than when we came up. We would honestly recommend coming up the Potholes trail rather than the balanced rock trail just for safety reasons.  Both trails can get quite slick in the rain, but the rocks are kind of slanted down rather than up on the Potholes trail.

Devil's Lake State Park

After making it down to the bottom of the hillside we walked along the lake for a bit and looked back towards our previous accomplishment. It is always fun looking back and saying, hey all, I was up there and got to see all that beautiful nature stuff. Hope you all get to enjoy the place like we did!
