Hiking to Awosting Falls at Minnewaska State Park in New York

Deanna and I try to spend every moment we can getting outside and exploring. Near the beginning of this year (2017) Deanna and I bought our very first RV. This has allowed us to go to different places and set up a “base camp” to launch our adventures from.

It’ll be much cheaper than hotels in the long run and we get the comfort of our home rather than borrowing someone else’s. It is especially an upgrade compared to our previous tent camping. 🙂

AWOSTING FALLS ARE AWESOME!

On this adventure we took our travel trailer to a RV park in New York called Catskills Adventure Resort. I’ll be posting a video/tour of that campground eventually and I’ll link it in this paragraph somewhere.

From there we had easy access to where we went on this adventure, Minnewaska State Park in New York. We both highly recommend heading to this state park if you are ever in the area. It has miles and miles of hiking as well as places to fish and ride horses if you have them.

SO MANY TRAILS

After arriving at the park we had to decide which of the many trails to hike for the day. This is a lot easier said than done due to the plethora of trails scattered throughout the park.

We quickly asked someone working at the state park if there were any trails Blaze (our dog if you are new to our blog) couldn’t go on. He seemed fairly confident that all the trails were dog friendly and we can say at least all the trails we did hike were in fact dog friendly.

THE FALLS

The first trail we decided to head towards wasn’t all that far away from the parking lot our truck was in. We did have to backtrack down the road a bit to get to the trail head, but man was it worth it.

Awosting Falls trail actually starts near a stream that flows down to the falls. The stream starts off fairly smooth, begins cascading down a few drops, and then finally rushes over the edge of a cliff.

WATCH YOUR STEP!

I think I might say this in every blog post, but Deanna keeps getting better and better at taking these pictures. What I upload to the website doesn’t do them justice since I have to compress them down quite a ways so it doesn’t take a year to load.

Once we find the time, hopefully we can add a feature to this website where you’ll be able to order prints of our adventure photos. We’ve done a couple in the past for family and ourselves, but that would be fun to share with everyone.

Minnewaska State Park 3DANGEROUS BUT BEAUTIFUL

Do make sure you are careful along the edge of this cliff as it is quite a drop off the side. It is so beautiful with the contrasts of color throughout this area of the park. The water is actually kind of a dark brown color from I’m guessing iron deposits or possibly some sort of algae? Either way, it looks really cool!

After you hike down a couple switchbacks there is quite a view looking backing up towards the top of the falls. It kind of makes you want to just jump in the water and take a shower, but we did resist as it was a cooler day. 🙂

Minnewaska State Park 5SOOTHING CREEK

I think the trail only went on for about another mile or so, but we decided to just explore the base of the waterfall a bit before heading back up the switchbacks. This is a very beautiful part of the park and it is pretty easy to get to from the parking lot. This is probably why the trail and parking lot was fairly busy even early in the morning when we arrived.
